چکیده

Background An essential aspect of music is that it unfolds over time. Thus, understanding the perception and processing of the temporal organization of musical events (rhythm and metre) is critical to understanding music cognition and perception. The perception of similarity has been used as a measure of the underlying processing of categories of stimuli. There are various approaches and theories accounting for the perception of similarity including feature-based (Tversky, 1977), geometric (Shepard, 1987), and transformational (Chater and Vitanyi, 2003). Regarding music cognition, the perception of similarity has been used in research on the perception of melody (Eerola, et al., 2001) and computational approaches (Müllensiefen and Frieler, 2004), however very little work has investigated the perception of rhythmic similarity specifically. Information theoretic approaches to music cognition can use computational models of the statistical properties of music to predict perception and neural responses to music (e.g. Pearce, et al., 2010), and provide information-processing models of the perceptual similarity between objects, based on how predictable an event is given the statistical properties of other events, or the information required to transform one stimulus configuration to another. These are consistent with an approach to music cognition that gives the statistical properties of musical events a central role, along with their effects on expectation, predictability, and emotional responses (e.g. Huron, 2006).

Perception of Rhythmic Similarity is Asymmetrical, and Is Influenced by Musical Training, Expressive Performance, and Musical Context

Rhythm is an essential part of the structure, behaviour, and aesthetics of music. However, the cognitive processing that underlies the perception of musical rhythm is not fully understood. In this study, we tested whether rhythm perception is influenced by three factors: musical training, the presence of expressive performance cues in human-performed music, and the broader musical context. We c...

The effect of music-therapy based on rhythmic activities on visual motor perception of children with autism spectrum disorder

Introduction: Among the problems of children with autism spectrum disorder is the presence of abnormalities in sensory processing and perceptual movement disorders that can cause many behavioral problems in this group of children. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of music-based therapy on rhythmic activity on visual visual perception of children with autism spectrum disorder....

Emergence and Complexity in Music

How can we apply mathematical notions of complexity and emergence to music, and how can these mathematical ideas then inspire new musical works? Using Steve Reich’s Clapping Music as a starting point, we look for emergent patterns in music by considering cases where a piece’s complexity is significantly different from the total complexity of each of the individual parts. Definitions of complexi...

The musical language Elements of Persian musical language: modes, rhythm and syntax

In treating the subject of musical language, a Persian musician would be intrinsically drawn to the structural similarities between the Persian music and language. Indeed Persian music and language are extremely related in their metrics, intonations and structural phrases (syntax). Although we will draw upon this relationship, our aim in this article is to present “music as a language,” c...

Recognition of Hand Clapping Sounds - The Significance of Timbre in Steve

Although hand clapping is a ubiquitous activity all over the world, and employed in a wide variety of activities, it remains an understudied topic in the field of pattern recognition. In both traditional and modern music, hand clapping is used predominantly as a percussion instrument. This paper describes preliminary results of an ongoing research project to determine how to measure the similar...
